We at the Law Offices of Antoinette Middleton (LOAM) believe that the starting point for all happiness is shifting the focus away from ourselves. If a person truly wants to be happy in life, he or she has to care about the needs of those around them.

Pastor Rick Warren, founder of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California said that most people are worrying about their own plans and aren’t looking out for the interests of others. Most people don’t get up in the morning and give their first thought to how someone else is doing. Most people are concerned with their own problems; that’s why most people are unhappy with their lives!

Pastor Warren goes on to say that if you want to be one of those rare, unselfish people, you’ve got to change your focus. You have to shift your focus away from yourself to other people. That’s not something that comes naturally, so it’s something you have to learn to do.Instead of grieving missed opportunities, it is better to be intentional about looking away from yourself and to the needs of others, where you’ll find happiness in serving God through serving others.

The message of caring for others and charity can be found throughout the bible. One of our favorite verses is “Love not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.” Philippians 2:4 (KJV).

Many notable people have made similar statements and observations. In the words of Mother Teresa “Love is not patronizing and charity isn't about pity, it is about love. Charity and love are the same -- with charity you give love, so don't just give money but reach out your hand instead.”

One of our favorite quotes from Maya Angelou is “When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed.”

And so, a major focus at LOAM is to open our hearts to be mindful of the need of others, by giving back to the greater community through education, and charitable donations of tangible and financial resources.
